Higher Education in Universalized Era: Recent Trends and Suggestions for Reforms

Objective of the Course
Higher education in US and Japan has been entering the Universalize Era with the percentile of senior high school students almost 50% get in the college. In Universalized Era, teachers will face many difficulty problems to handle the students with less motivation towards their study and goals in classes, which is much different compare to the Elite Education Era (under 15%). In recent years, the education systems has been breakdown and college students with deteriorating academic skills have become important social issues, while the demand for a more “motivational education method” is increasing. Yet, objective methods to evaluate the effectiveness of educational methods have so far not existed. Compared to students from other countries, Japanese college students have been said to lack the desire to learn. Taking the viewpoint that college professor function not only as researchers but also as teachers, we have sought to foster confidence and motivation in these students.  Reconsidering the use of traditional teaching methods, an unconventional style, a new pedagogy in guiding each and every one of students to realize their limitless potential by IOC (Interactive Operational Control) pedagogy will be introduced.

In this class, students will learn some problems of higher education which is appeared in the Universalized Era. Some suggestions for reforms and approaches toward these problems will be discussed.

Grading Policy
Attendance and class participation: 40%
Discussion and presentation: 20%
Final paper/Group case study & presentation: 40%

In addition to traditional type classes, we will read and analyze recently published articles in a discussion format. Students are expected to actively participate in the discussion.
