Ethnic and national identities have proved in the last two centuries as most potent foci of collective identity and most powerful agents of political mobilization. Contemporary politics in many countries is barely comprehensible without reference to ethnicity and nationalism. The course will deal with the theoretical issues involved and with case studies from all parts of the world. The political potential of these forces will be explored.
