Venice
is an immense ‘historic center’ and is entirely
pedestrian. It hosts approximately twelve million visitors
each year. In the interest of residents and tourists alike,
respect the following simple guidelines.
- When you are walking through the city, especially in the
narrowest ‘calli’ (or streets), keep to the right,
one person behind the other, allowing room for people coming
from the other direction, or for people who want to walk faster
than you
- If you stop on a bridge remember to leave room for others
to pass, especially people transporting goods
- Keep the city clean. It is prohibited to have picnic lunches
on bridges and around monuments
- As in any city pick-pockets are active especially on boarding
docks and vaporetti, and in the more crowded streets
- Beware of touts who might offer you, without the proper
authorization, visits to glass showrooms, stores, parking
areas or means of transportation
- Disabled tourists may visit the city by following the itineraries
suggested by the a.p.t. tourist offices and consulting the
map supplied by them. http://www.comune.venezia.it/handicap/turismo_eng.asp
Lido
The island of the Lido acts as a barrier between the Venetian
lagoon and the Adriatic sea. The island is 12 kilometers long
and in ten minutes you can walk from the center of the Lido
to the beach. From the central boat stop on the Lido (‘Santa
Maria Elisabetta‘) follow the Gran Viale, away from
Venice, to the public beach. You can also rent bicycles in
the Gran Viale. From Venice the boats leave for the Lido from
the Riva degli Schiavoni, ‘San Zaccaria‘. Take
boat number 51, 82, 1 or LN in direction ‘Lido‘
and get off at ‘Santa Maria Elisabetta‘, the first
stop on the Lido.
Banks
Most opening hours for banks are: 8.30 -13.30 and 14.30-15.30.
However, different banks often have different afternoon opening
hours. You can change money with a valid passport and a minimal
service charge at the counter marked ‘cambio‘.
There are also several exchange agencies throughout the city.
The best place to change cash is at the central post office
at Rialto or simply use ATM machines to withdraw cash. The
closest ATM machine to San Servolo is found just off Piazza
San Marco, walk under the clock tower, and you will find it
20 m. on, to the left.

Restaurants
It is a long-established Venetian tradition to take a break
at intervals during the day (particularly towards noon and
before the evening meal). At this time, people go to a wine
bar, called a bacaro where you can have a glass of
wine and something to eat without the hassle and expense of
a proper restaurant. Bacari are home to the true
Venetian cuisine. They serve un’ombra (a small
glass of wine) and cicheti (traditional snacks).
There is a an immense variety, including baccalà, meatballs,
fish appetizers, fried vegetables and many more. Another popular
aperitif is the spritz, a light wine cocktail.
If you want to emulate the Venetians, drink an ombra
or a spritz and eat some cichetti at the
bacari. The ritual visit to this wine-bar is an important
part of the rhythm of life in Venice, and a Venetian way of
catching up with friends. Naturally, there are also many restaurants
in Venice. The division between bars and restaurants is often
difficult to draw: many restaurants have a bar area on the
street side of the dining room, while some bars have basic
sit-down areas for eating. Virtually all bars are good for
a quick snack at any time. In the VIU main offices (Zone 2,
ground floor) you can consult the restaurant guide ‘Osterie
e dintorni’.
Shopping
General retail store hours are from 9.30 to 12.30 and from
15.30 to 19.30. Although many shops in Venice now stay open
throughout the day, others close on Monday mornings and for
lunch from 12.30 to 15.30. Grocery stores, pharmacies and
bakeries open as early as 8.30 and close at lunchtime. Most
food stores are closed on Wednesday afternoons and on Sundays.
The main shopping district for clothes and accessories is
the area between Rialto and San Marco.
